Chicago—The Pontian Greek Society of Chicago, with the support of the Federation of Greek American Organizations “ENOSIS,” the Hellenic Link-Midwest and the Pan Pontian Federation of USA and Canada, held an “Academic Conference on the Asia Minor Catastrophe” on Nov. 7 at the Westin Hotel in Rosemont, IL. The conference focused on the Hellenic experience in Asia Minor, Pontus and Eastern Thrace during the early part of the 20th century and the events that followed the “Megali Catastrophe”.
George Shirinian, Executive Director of the International Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (A Division of the Zoryan Institute), who served as moderator, stated, “At last year’s conference organized by The Pontian Greek Society of Chicago, we collectively made a serious commitment to promote awareness and understanding of the Great Catastrophe beyond the Greek community, through scholarly research, publication, and educational programs. We agreed that it was time for this important historical event to be incorporated into the mainstream study of genocide and the gross violation of human rights. In this regard, today’s conference is a great success. I saw some exciting original research presented here, and its publication will make a great contribution to our knowledge and understanding of this neglected subject.”
Dr. Van Coufoudakis, Rector Emeritus at the University of Nicosia, in Cyprus and Dean Emeritus of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne, spoke on “From Lausanne (1923) to Cyprus (2009): Turkey’s Violations of International Law and the Destruction of Historic Hellenic Communities.” He illustrated the continuity of foreign and domestic policies of the Ottoman Committee for Union and Progress with those of ensuing administrations of the Republic of Turkey, providing an extensive list of violations of treaties, international
Ο Σύλλογος Ελλήνων Ποντίων Σικάγο φιλοξενεί την σύνοδο για την Καταστροφή στη Μικρά Ασία

Σικάγο- Ο Σύλλογος Ελλήνων Ποντίων Σικάγο, με την υποστήριξη της Ομοσπονδίας Ελληνοαμερικανικών Οργανώσεων «Η Ένωσις», του Ελληνικού Συνδέσμου Μεσοδυτικών πολιτειών και της Παμποντιακής Ομοσπονδίας Αμερικής και Καναδά, πραγματοποίησε την «Ακαδημαϊκή Σύνοδο για την Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή», στις 7 Νοεμβρίου, στο συνεδριακό κέντρο του ξενοδοχείου Γουέστιν, στο Ρόουζμοντ, Ιλλινόις.
Η Σύνοδος επικεντρώθηκε στην Ελληνική εμπειρία στην Μικρά Ασία, στον Πόντο και στην Ανατολική Θράκη, στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα και στα γεγονότα που ακολούθησαν μετά τη «Μεγάλη Καταστροφή».

«Ο σκοπός αυτής της συνόδου», είπε ο κ. Γιώργος Μαυρόπουλος, Πρόεδρος του Συλλόγου, «είναι να παρουσιάσουμε πρωτότυπες νέες έρευνες σχετικές με την εθνοκάθαρση και τη Γενοκτονία των Ελλήνων της Μικράς Ασίας, του Πόντου και της Ανατολικής Θράκης από το 1913 μέχρι το 1923». Ο κ. Μαυρόπουλος πρόσθεσε, « Θέλουμε να κάνουμε μια σημαντική συνεισφορά στο ελάχιστο μέρος της βιβλιογραφίας που υπάρχει στα Αγγλικά, ώστε να βοηθήσουμε στην προώθηση της γνώσης και της κατανόησης αυτής της πλέον κρίσιμης περιόδου της σύγχρονης Ιστορίας».
Ο πρώτος ομιλητής ήταν ο δρ. Τανέρ Ακτσάμ, βοηθός Καθηγητής Ιστορίας και κάτοχος της έδρας Ρόμπερτ Αράμ και Μαριάν Καλοσντιάν και Στίβεν και Μάριον Μουγκάρ, στις Αρμενικές σπουδές Γενοκτονίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κλαρκ. Η εργασία του « Οι ελληνικές διώξεις και σφαγές του 1913-1914: Δοκιμή για την Αρμενική Γενοκτονία», ήταν ιδαίτερα πολύτιμη γιατί βασίστηκε σε αδημοσίευτα μέχρι τώρα ντοκουμέντα από τα Οθωμανικά αρχεία.

* Reprinting rare books with a focus on the events of 1908 - 1923 in Asia Minor and Pontus
* Translating books and documents from Greek to English and English to Greek
* Identifying funding and logistics for the research center

Το Ενωμένο Ελληνο-Αμερικανικό Κογκρέσσο (UHAC), η Ομοσπονδία ΕΝΩΣΙΣ, η Παμποντιακή Ομοσπονδία Αμερικής και Καναδά και ο Σύλλογος Ελλήνων Ποντίων του Σικάγο διοργάνωσαν το συνέδριο με θέμα «Η καταστροφή στην Μικρά Ασία και στον Πόντο», που έλαβε χώρα στο Σικάγο την Παρασκευή 9 και Σάββατο 10 Μαΐου 2008.
